Starting this Saturday, four Mendocino County clubs are partnering to ensure a merry Christmas season for local children.
The Mendocino Rugby Football Club, the Active 20-30 Club of Ukiah, Mendo Mayhem and Deep Valley Belligerents roller derby clubs are collecting toys for the Ukiah Valley Christmas Effort, which helps families in need during the holidays with a Christmas meal and presents.
At their next public events, each group will have a donation box to collect unwrapped presents, preferably balls (soccer, football, basketball, etc.), dolls (Barbie and others), Lego sets, and tea sets.
Ukiah Valley Christmas Effort committee member Mo Mulheren is excited. “Our efforts to help these kids can only happen through the generosity of others willing to donate toys to the cause. The more people and organizations that can help collect toys now, the greater our chances are of helping more children come the end of December. Also, establishing a relationship with more community organizations now will help us with volunteer needs around Christmas time.”
“This is a type of cause in which everyone wins,” says Active 20-30 Club member Brian Bunt. “The Ukiah Valley Christmas Effort has the established history of distributing these toys and we have the manpower to help collect and deliver.”
Rugby club captain, Michael Winter continues, “What’s really great is that each of these groups is dedicated not only to improving their own organizations, but want to help the community. In the past, we’ve worked together helping roller derby with security, but it’s nice to be a part of a partnership that helps kids, which is something we are focusing on this year as a club.”
Deep Valley Belligerents President, Chris Kier concludes, “This type of partnership has worked well in the past for club structural challenges, so it felt natural to bring the partnership to a more philanthropic side.”
The Mendo Mayhem’s and Deep Valley Belligerents’ next roller derby match is this Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Redwood Empire Fair. The Active 20-30 Club of Ukiah’s next meeting is Nov. 21 at Insurance Mommy. The Mendocino Rugby Club’s next home game is Dec. 14 at Pomolita Field. Finally, the next organizational meeting for the Ukiah Valley Christmas Effort is this Thursday, Nov. 14, at Insurance Mommy. Toys for the cause can also be dropped off at Insurance Mommy during business hours.
